How a sweepstakes brand works
The whole category comes down to one structural difference from a traditional online casino: where the currency comes from. Once that is clear, the rest of the vocabulary falls into place.

A traditional casino, for contrast
In a traditional online casino, the pattern is familiar and money-shaped. A person adds funds to their account using a bank card or another supported payment method. That account balance is then used across slots, poker, blackjack and roulette. The balance is managed according to the operator's terms and conditions, and it moves in and out as real money.
Everything about how those brands are reviewed follows from that: licensing, payment methods, bonus terms and wagering requirements, withdrawal speed and limits. It is a review of how money moves.
How a sweepstakes brand differs
A sweepstakes brand is structured differently. Rather than funding sessions directly, people take part using virtual currencies that are distributed through promotional mechanics. In practice that means:
- New registrants commonly receive a complimentary allocation of virtual coins when they create an account.
- Daily login rewards are a standard feature rather than an occasional promotion.
- Further virtual currency can usually be earned through promotions, challenges and other activities.
- Slot-style and table-style titles are then run using those virtual currencies.
The result is that a sweepstakes brand emphasises its virtual economy, its rewards structure and its promotional system — not a funding page. That shift is not cosmetic. It is what places the category outside real-money regulation in the jurisdictions where it operates, and it is why the rules that govern it are sweepstakes rules rather than casino rules.
The line that defines the category
Any brand that offers cash payments, or prizes exchangeable for cash, is not a social or sweepstakes brand at all. It is full real-money entertainment and must follow the gambling rules of whichever market it operates in. The presence of a virtual currency does not change that on its own.
What a session looks like
From the inside, a session resembles what you would expect: a library of slot-style titles, some table formats, and at a handful of brands live-dealer style rooms. The difference sits in the header of the screen, where two balances are shown rather than one. Everything you do draws on whichever of the two you have selected, and switching between them changes what the session means.
Sessions run in Gold Coins are entertainment and nothing else. Sessions run in Sweeps Coins are the promotional side of the model, where entries accumulate toward a redemption threshold set by the brand.
Where the virtual currency comes from
| Route | What it gives you | Purchase required |
|---|---|---|
| Registration allocation | An opening amount of virtual currency, usually both types | No |
| Daily login reward | A recurring allocation for returning to the brand | No |
| Promotions and challenges | Additional virtual currency for taking part in brand activity | No |
| Mail-in request | Promotional entries requested in writing under the official rules | No |
| Gold Coin pack | Entertainment-only coins, with promotional entries bundled alongside | Optional |
Only the last row involves money, and it is optional. A purchase does not improve your chance of receiving promotional entries — that principle is what keeps the structure valid, and it is stated in every legitimate brand's official rules.
How redemption eligibility works
Promotional entries accumulated during play may become eligible for prize redemption once a minimum threshold is reached — typically in the range of C$50 to C$100, though it is set by each brand and stated in its own official rules rather than by any industry standard. Reaching a threshold makes entries eligible; it does not, on its own, complete anything. Identity verification, jurisdictional eligibility and the brand's processing timetable all apply.
What to check before registering
- That your state or province is eligible today, not that the category is generally available.
- That you meet the minimum age — 18, or higher where your jurisdiction sets it higher.
- Where the brand's official rules live, and what the redemption threshold and processing time are.
- Which free entry routes exist, and how the mail-in request is actually made.
- What a Gold Coin pack contains, if you intend to buy one at all.
Play for fun only. No cash prizes.
Tessera covers entertainment-only sweepstakes and social casino brands. No real money wagering takes place on the brands described here, and nothing on this website offers cash, cash-equivalent credits, or prizes that can be sold or traded for money. Sweepstakes and social casino entertainment is a leisure activity. It is not a source of income, not an investment, and not a way to resolve financial difficulty.
